First Michelin Guide Comes To Dubai

This June marks the unveiling of the very first Michelin Guide Dubai and the Dubai selection 2022, with a total of 69 restaurants covering 21 cuisine types; 14 restaurants getting a Bib Gourmand; nine receiving a Michelin Star; and two earning two Michelin Stars.

Dubai is the latest addition to the 35 culinary destinations across North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Europe. Home to thousands of restaurants serving a variety of cuisines from fine dining to street food, headed by talented international and homegrown chefs, the Michelin Guide Dubai is providing a fresh perspective and new insights into the diversity, creativity and multicultural nature of Dubai’s culinary offering – one that is drawn from traditional Emirati cuisine, as well as from the cuisines of more than 200 other nationalities living in the city.

Impressively, Dubai welcomed 7.28 million international overnight visitors in 2021, setting the city firmly on course to achieve sustainable growth on its way to becoming the world’s most visited destination. These figures underline the resilience and resurgence of the city’s travel and tourism sector. With food tourism – traveling to explore different destinations’ food culture and heritage – on the rise, the launch of the Michelin Guide Dubai will be a catalyst to position Dubai as the destination of choice for foodies and gourmets seeking authentic culinary experiences across all tastes and budgets.

“This very first Dubai selection of restaurants marks a historical moment for the Michelin Guide and the Middle East,” says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide. “What makes Dubai’s culinary landscape so distinctive is its reflection of the more than 200 nationalities that call the city home, delivering an epicurean kaleidoscope.”

The Michelin Guide conveys its restaurant reviews through an extensive system of symbols, the most revered of which are its globally renowned Michelin Stars. One Star is awarded to restaurants for “high quality cooking that is worth a stop,” Two stars for “excellent cooking that is worth a detour,” and Three Michelin Stars for “exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.”

Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, told me: “I believe Emirati food is the less-known of all cuisines available in Dubai and also the most authentic. If one would like to understand the local culture, I would recommend to taste the Machboos, one of the most popular rice dishes in Emirati cuisine: it can be prepared with chicken, lamb, or fish. The main flavorings are cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, lemon, and sometimes saffron. Then Luqaimat is the most popular traditional Emirati dessert: crunchy dumplings, soft on the inside, soaked in honey or a sweet, sticky date syrup. I would also recommend a cultural lunch or dinner at the Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding, a non-profit organization that promotes awareness of Emirati culture.”
